Discover Kate Boy: My First Prague Live Music Experience

kate boy, prague, music, live music, music blog

It only took me 2 weeks to get settled in Prague before I felt the urge to venture out and experience the live music scene. I pulled up my Bandsintown app and scrolled through the numerous electronic DJs that were set to play that weekend at the hundreds of Prague nightclubs. Finally, I found a show that was recommended to me based off an electronic-pop artist that I frequently listen to. Kate Boy was playing Saturday night at the Meet Factory. This was my first time hearing of Kate Boy and I  certainly haven’t been to the Meet Factory venue before, but it sounded like a show I would go to back in the U.S.

After lightly researching Kate Boy, who at first sounded like a mix between Charli XCX and Allie X, I was sold. Now it was time to find out where this venue was located. I’m not too familiar with the different neighborhoods and districts in Prague, but by looking at the map, it seemed the Meet Factory was located slightly outside of the main city center in an area that didn’t have many other attractions. Google street view confirmed it was, in fact, located in a warehouse. I didn’t think twice about going. It seemed like an authentic European music experience to me.

I have to admit I took an Uber to this show because I’m not too comfortable with the multiple tram and bus lines that it would have taken to get to this location. I instantly felt good vibes when I arrived. The warehouse was isolated overlooking train tracks and surrounded by graffitied walls and signs. There were 2 large, red car sculptures hanging from the facade of the building marking the entrance. The venue is a performance art gallery that is sectioned off  into different spaces. The people were my people. I was in my zone surrounded by so much art and culture.

The opening DJ, Atrey, played an 80s-inspired electronic set to start the night. The intimate performance space filled with smoke, bright lights, and people starting to loosen up to the music. Kate Boy was on next, and the Australian-Swedish duo brought an electric energy into the room with their synth beats and pop vocals. They played an incredible set that converted me into a fan. This was their last show on tour and they said they would be heading back to the studio to make new music following this closing show.

I left feeling positive about the music scene in Prague and can’t wait to keep exploring what’s out there. I hope to frequent the Meet Factory, whether for music or other art events in the gallery.

I discovered Gnash right around the same time that I woke up to a frantic series of texts from a friend who lost their “Kanye Attitude With Drake Feelings” shirt on a flight from LA to Dallas, and I thought Gnash’s minimalist, poetic hip-hop lyrics were the perfect score for the cinematic reenactment that was playing in my head. Gnash’s sound blurs the lines between pop, indie-electronic, and hip-hop music.

Gnash’s music is derived from raw situations and emotional narratives:

I’ll be keeping an eye on Gnash, and I look forward to hearing new music!

LANY is an electro-R&B trio that has been circulating the music scene over the past year, and I have a feeling we’ll be hearing a lot more from them going into 2016. In 2014 LANY released their EP, Acronyms, which included ILYSB, which quickly began gaining success. The band kept making and releasing their synth-fueled pop music over 2015, including another EP, 4EVER!. LANY is keeping the momentum going through the end of 2015 with the announcement that they will be on tour with Ellie Goulding and dropping a new Make Out, their new EP featuring remastered versions of previously released music.

Some days call for a little soul-R&B-pop-electronica music, right? Brayton Bowman has successfully found the intersection of these genres, or what he refers to as  “90s-R&B-influenced electronic music.” When I first heard Jaywalk, which is Brayton’s most listened to song on Spotify with nearly 300k listens, I couldn’t resist playing every song on his 2 available EPs. Not only was it instantly obvious how talented he is just by hearing a few verses of his soulful vocals, but he has an innovative sound which was refreshing.

I am a fan, and eager to hear more from him. Go check out Brayton!

Discover Kauai Vibes

Today is my third full day on Kauai island, but the laid back lifestyle is making an imprint. It wouldn’t be a true island experience without music. Car rides are accompanied with the island radio stations that play a classic mix of reggae ranging from Bob Marley to Sublime. One of my favorite songs that is frequently played on the radio is Touchdown by Garrett Douglas. Maybe I’ve been living under a rock, but this is the first time I’ve heard this song.

Many restaurants and bars have a small stage where a local acoustic artist or duo will play traditional Hawaiian music which becomes the soundtrack to dinner or drinks.

I’ve also been looping the Spotify Beach Vibes playlist while spending quality time on the beach.

This slower tempo music is helping my internal metronome adjust to the island lifestyle, and I don’t mind this pace at all!
